ABOUT Alexandra Gibson
"I met Alexandra in 2008 and one of the first things I noticed while reviewing of her portfolio was that she has a very original vision. Alexandra is a woman of deep personal and artistic integrity... In her personal work, Alexandra investigates her own relationship to the physical universe - whatever that universe might be. She tells her story through the different people she meets in her own particular world. The people she photographs move through a unique space - sometimes bizarre, sometimes beautiful - always layered with deep psychological undertones." -Mary Ellen Mark

Alexandra Gibson is a photographer with a background in both art photography and journalism. Her images carry a strong sense of personal and editorial narrative with an eye for the surreal. Her current style represents a cross-fertilization of social realism, erotica, and spirituality. The ongoing series she is working on "The Collective Dream" is being shot in eleven countries in five years with an anticipated exhibition opening with ArtistMuse Fall 2015. This series addresses anonymity - an increasingly rare human experience and the idea that our souls are the intangible breathe of life that allow us to share in a collective dream. With the photographic medium the series shows the innate interaction of the spiritual world and the physical. The sacred is found in each environment by obscuring the immediate personality of the subject to elevate the visual dialogue between spirit and terrain while each muse is behind a blank white mask, the spirit within. Gibson has exhibited in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Her most recent solo exhibitions have been at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles & Skotia Gallery in Culver City. In 2013 Advocate and Gochis Galleries did a 15 year retrospective of her work in their two galleries. LA Weekly on For Consumption Only series: "Macabre at first glance but more intensely revealing with thoughtful scrutiny, the exhibit's photos pair live female forms with their deceased porcine counterparts in such a way that the two become indistinguishable. The monochromatic backdrop of the fully functioning slaughterhouse dramatically highlights the realist flesh tones of both hog and human. Occasional motions in her models, shown by trailing photographic ghosts, inform the viewer that her human subjects are very much alive amid stagnant piles of death. It's raw sexuality juxtaposed with unsettling morbidity."
